Read what Lovisa Andersson has to say about her experiences as a volunteer at Spiritus Mundi during the spring term 2009:
I started out as a volunteer here at Spiritus Mundi through a friend, who during the fall had been participating in a project called the Young Culture Ambassadors, through Amnesty. I wanted to do something fun and different for a change between schoolwork, so the Young Culture Ambassadors sounded like a good project to engage in.
I've been working a lot with theater and dance before and wanted to find new ways to be creative and find use of my knowledge in music and culture. My part in this project with the Young Culture Ambassadors was to be a backup to the music coaches, and I got to take a big part in their work. It was a lot of fun to work with so many creative people and I've learned a lot from everyone who works at Spiritus Mundi.
The students that come to Spiritus Mundi all have different experiences with music and some have never played an instrument or sung before, while others have been doing it for while and know a lot. This mixture of people creates different challenges and it takes a while before you find the right level to work on, but you learn so much of what you are able to do by teaching others. I was actually longing for Tuesdays and Thursdays when I got to get away from my studies and school and go to be with all these fun, nice people who were a part of the project. To be able to see these students evolve and to feel that you have progressed is very fun and you get so much back from everyone. I probably spent more time on the YCA than I originally had planned, but it just got better and better with every week that passed by so it was definitely worth the time! The appreciation you get from students, coaches and all the employees at Spiritus Mundi was very supportive and it is an amazing experience to take with you to new places.
At the end of the semester with the big concert coming up, I was probably just as nervous as all the students. Now all the work during the semester would finally be put to the test. It went really well and I am extremely impressed of how committed and goal-oriented everybody was. But even if the result would have been a disaster, it felt like all the work we had put in together was worth so much that the successful concert became a much appreciated bonus.
As a volunteer at Spiritus Mundi and in the project the Young Culture Ambassadors I got to take a big part of the planning, execution and evaluation, which makes you feel needed and appreciated and it really drives you to continue to work with it. Like I said before, everyone's support, both students and employees have made my spring semester with the Young Culture Ambassadors to an amazingly fun and educational time. I look forward to see the continuing work and I'm proud to have been a part of this project and to work with the people that are the future of Malmö!
