Wag the City is Spiritus Mundi’s three year initiative, on-going between 2008 and 2010, where youths meet over social, cultural and geographical borders through creativity, social issues and international culture dialogue. Wag the City operates in Malmö and in Botkyrka, Stockholm.

Wag the City currently runs, with support from the Swedish Inheritance Fund, two main projects:

Spiritus Mundi runs Young Culture Ambassadors together with several Malmö youth organisations, music and drama coaches and Malmö schools. In total 80 students participate from autumn 2008 to summer 2010.

During the first semester the youths got acquainted with a number of youth organisations, their work and their issues of interest. The second semester was devoted to music and text writing together with four music coaches. The spring of 2009 was concluded with the event Gunga Malmö (Wag the City) - a concert where the youths performed the songs they had written during the semester. In autumn 2009 the work with creating a musical /drama production started. The musical will premiere in May 2010.

Each semester also contains specially invited guests, lectures and discussions on international culture dialogue.

Wag the City Botkyrka begun in September 2009 in Botkyrka, Stockholm. 70 youths participate and they will also write and perform a musical/drama production. The Wag the City Botkyrka musical will premiere in November 2010. The youths in Botkyrka will also participate during one number in the Malmö musical.
Work and project concepts

• Are you with us? – a musical project concept, where children and young people with different social and cultural background write, record and perform music together. Are you with us? has been carried out in Malmö 2006/2007 and in Botkyrka 2008, with great results.

Creativity, cooperation and respect for other human beings are central terms in these projects. After two successful projects, the organisation has access to a wide-ranging network of professional musicians with pedagogical skills. The project brings young people from different parts of a city closer together.

International culture exchange – meeting grounds on the international arena. Through several trips to, and culture exchanges with, Oman, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, China and the United Arab Emirates, the organisation possesses great competence regarding culture diplomacy and how to create meeting grounds across national borders. The organisation has carried out an art exchange between Swedish and Saudi children in the project Riyadh Calling, Malmö are you with us? and several exchanges between Swedish and Middle Eastern musicians. The organisation has experience and competence both when it comes to negotiating and planning on a high organisational level and when it comes to the practical and pedagogical performance.
The orchestra – music has since the beginning been a kernel in the Spiritus Mundi activities. The orchestra has toured in the Middle East, played with young people from Malmö and Botkyrka in the Are you with us? projects, as well as entertained audiences on corporate dinners, music festivals and welcomed newly arrived children waiting to be granted asylum.

It is an excellent instrument at meetings with an intercultural characteristic. The orchestra can be booked in everything from small, acoustic setting to full setting, with music that mixes Eastern and Western traditions.
